THE IDEAL NIGERIA Ideals are like an anchor that holds a nation, allowing it to have focus and purpose. Great nations and great men have thrived on and have lived and died for the ideals they stand for. Where is our dear country in the scheme of things, could it be that we never had an ideal to build our dreams on or our founding fathers did not pass the ideals with much clarity and force as to mix with our genes even at birth as it were? The America of today has a solid ideal or dream as they called it, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Once a child is born, it is as if he is enmeshed into these ideals, like a Christian being baptized into his faith. The country becomes the ultimate beneficiary of a well rounded and driven human who is not only motivated towards individualism but whose single effort as a unit contributes to the overall development and security of the country. Not to be forgotten is the fact that the American society is not very much different from our dear country Nigeria. A man without hope is said to be as good as death. What gives hope is the fight to attain a height a goal. Therefore if there is nothing to live for it is easy to let even a modicum of disquieting thoughts to swerve you away from your cause. The family institution serves as a strong tool in changing people since any trait displayed by a family over time becomes their trade mark whether negatively or positively. Therefore the family’s name becomes something of a restraint against the doing of evil while serving as a rudder for good well. A society that pushes the amassing of wealth without a proportionate sense of responsibility is only eroding its pillars and helping to put it on the cause to extinction. The provision of material things such as food, shelter, clothing and education is not only a basic need but a right, however more is involved in building a well rounded and balance human with aspirations that are not self destructive. Most Nigerian fathers who are suppose to be responsible for impacting ideals into their children are busy climbing the corporate ladder or steering big business ventures leaving them with little time to give mental strength in form of knowledge which leads to understanding and in turn leads to wisdom to their children. To make matters worse mothers in their newly acquired ‘independent feminist republic’ have swung themselves on the trade mill and increase the speed to catch up with their male folks forgetting the emotional needs of their children whom they painstakingly carried for 9 months. So if you have given so much to a project is it not only wise to see to its successful completion? All hope is not lost, though we have sailed far away from our original course but for the fact that our ship has not hit the iceberg causing total wreckage, we can stir it to its right direction again. We shall only be delayed but like they say, better late than never. The time is now, right now and not tomorrow. Procrastination is the thief of time, in fact not only a thief of time but of worthwhile ideals necessary for a satisfying life. Fathers’, mothers’ it is high time you redirect your energy to something more worthwhile and enduring. Quality time is a dangerous and retrogressive theory invented to erode the family institution and its ideal-instilling function. No amount of money amassed or education acquired without a corresponding character formation can build and sustain any society. What we give today is nothing compared to the wonderful future we shall build for our children. The prize is little just time and ideals, we shall be there. There is nothing like a free pie anymore. You must pay in one way or the other. Paying now is better since you don’t know how much interest will be charge in the future it may be your son or your grand children who would pay for your greed and self-destruction. Why not save them the heartache? The choice is ours to make NOW.
