THE INDICTMENT OF GOVERNOR PERRY: Worth another look? I posted on the indictment before and a lot of folks thought it was purely politically motivated and without substance, and I have to admit, at the time I pretty much agreed. Ive had a chance to do more reading since then, and it is pretty interesting. I may be changing my mind. First of all, the complaint first came to the office of the D.A. in charge of the Public Corruption unit, the very person Perry was trying to coerce into resigning. She recused herself. In fact, all Democrats who could have been involved recused themselves. The charge was brought to the Grand Jury by a Republican. Two judges looked at the case, both Republicans, both had the authority to dismiss the case and they did not. This complaint was brought before the Governor vetoed the appropriation to the Public Corruption program. It is not about his veto. It is about threatening a public official and abusing his authority. When you add to the mix that two Republican D.A.s have been convicted of DUI during Perrys tenure as Governor and it looks pretty solidly as if Perry was simply tying to force a Dem out of office to get a Republican in her place. By the way, it turns out that the Public Corruption unit was currently investigating a cancer charity staffed by some Perry cronies. Great way to head that investigation off. members of the Grand Jury, in spite of their oath not to talk about their deliberations, are. They say they are not participating in a political farce. They say it is real. Anyway, I initially thought this would all blow over and be forgotten. Even the typically conservative Dallas Morning News says this deserves to go all the way through the court system. It wouldnt be the first time a long-serving pol had his ego run away with him.
