THE INTERMITTENT WORD ... 11 Aug, 2014 Do you know what God wants from you? Lots of us dont. We have a vague sense that He wants something, and if were unusually wise we grasp that what He wants from us is actually part and parcel of what He wants FOR us. In other words, God doesnt need anything from me - so when He asks me for something, its for my benefit. Still and yet, most people live with a great uncertainty when it comes to what God wants from them. Let me help. Jesus said, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means; I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. (Matt 9:12-13) The key words here are mercy and sacrifice. Very many people assume that the greatest thing we can give God is our sacrifice - so we give up this or that, thinking that the height of spiritual life is to abstain from evil. But Jesus flips that script. He says God is less interested in my sacrifices than He is in my mercies. The height of spiritual life is doing good. Its active, not reactive. When I give my mercy, it is more significant than when I give my sacrifices. When I love my neighbor, its more important than when I turn away from sin. Both are necessary, but the love is more significant. Maybe youve been obsessed with giving good sacrifices to the point that you have stopped giving mercy. Thats a dangerous place to be. The sick in spirit dont need me to perfect myself. They need my help. So ... who needs your mercy? Think carefully, because God is watching. Ill see you on Sunday. Be true!
