THE INTERMITTENT WORD ... 8 Sep, 2014 Contrary to popular opinion, the worst thing you can do is cultivate your self-esteem. These days, everyone wants to think highly of themselves. We want a good image, a good reputation, a hip brand. We work hard to compose our selfies, and we think its important to have high self-esteem. God disagrees. He knows that one of my biggest problems is that I secretly think too highly of myself. You do, too. So instead of frankly facing our lack or virtue, we photoshop ourselves in our own eyes. Its silly, and its wrong. The Bible says, Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. (Rom 12:3) In other words, be real with yourself. You have flaws. You have defects. You have things youre good at, and lots of things you arent very good at. Admit it. Own it. And be humble enough to recognize that you need practice at certain things in order to improve. Someone said to me recently, Im not good at greeting people. Okay - thats honest. But it doesnt excuse you from doing it. Instead, youre going to have to practice until you get good at it. Thats life in our Fathers house. He is determined to turn us all into saints because He loves us, because we are His children. So stop dodging practice, stop pretending you dont need a spiritual workout, and get down here in the dirt with the rest of us so you can grow up into the fullness of Christ (Eph 4:13). Youll be glad you did. Ill see you on Sunday. Be true!
