THE INTERNATIONAL UNION AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS AND LUNG DISEASES (THE UNION) OFFERS SOUTH ASIAN SORT-IT OPERATIONS RESEARCH COURSE – 2015 FOR COUNTRIES IN ASIA INCLUDING INDIA, PAKISTAN, BANGLADESH, BHUTAN, CHINA, CAMBODIA, MALDIVES, TIMOR LESTE, INDONESIA, MYANMAR, MALAYSIA, NEPAL, SRILANKA AND THAILAND 12 (TWELVE) FULL SCHOLARSHIPS (INCLUDING TUITION FEES, TRAVEL EXPENSES, MEALS AND ACCOMMODATION) WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE CENTRE. Location: Kathmandu, Nepal, APPLY BY: 30TH NOVEMEBER, 2014 The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) is an international scientific organization headquartered in Paris with a mission towards providing Health Solutions to the Poor. A leader in the field of TB, it works closely with leading international, regional and local TB control agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO). The Union’s Regional Office for South-East Asia (USEA), located in New Delhi, invites applications from the health programme/project managers/public health students from countries in Asia including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Cambodia, Maldives, Timor Leste, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Nepal, Srilanka, Thailand for a Regional Operations Research Training Course. The course is a “SORT IT” (Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative) course and is conducted under the umbrella of the Special Programme for Research into Tropical Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO-TDR). Purpose: To develop the practical skills for conducting operational research and publishing the findings Course curriculum: The course comprises three modules which will be held at Kathmandu, Nepal, as follows. Module 1: Research Questions and Protocol Development – March 2-7, 2015 Brief content overview • Introduction to Operational research • Developing research protocols • Research Terminology -Patients and data • Asking the right research questions • Simple analysis • Aims and Objectives -Ethics (Key Deliverable Output: A Draft Scientific Protocol) Module 2: Data management and data analysis – March 9-14, 2015 The module will consist of: Brief content overview • Designing an efficient data entry instrument • Making an efficient computer data entry questionnaire • Entering and validating data entry • Introduction to data analysis • Producing relevant analysis results in tabular form • Daily homework on own electronic data entry instrument (Key Deliverable Output: Draft electronic data entry instrument) Module 3: Scientific paper writing – December 11-18, 2015 Brief content overview • Learn the principles of writing a scientific paper • Learn how to deal with peer review (Key Deliverable Output: Draft paper to be submitted to a scientific journal) Sponsorship The Centre will provide a full scholarship to successful applicants (12 numbers). The scholarship includes all tuition fees, travel expenses, meals and accommodation.
