THE IRISH ROCK. THE UNDERTONES (THE UNDERTONES / SIRE, 1979). A five-piece combo formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1976. Brothers John and Damian O´Neill (guitars), Michael Bradley (bass), Billy Doherty (drums) and Feargal Sharkey (vocals) became a teen proptotype since their debut single "Teenage Kicks" was on, in 1978, released by a Belfast record shop owner Terry Hooley on his Good Vibration label. John Peel (Aug, 30th 1939-Oct, 25th, 2004), a late Britain´s DJ, as receiving the single for his ´Peel Sessions´on BBC Radio, put it on twice on his radio show. Two chords wondered for the song. Michael Bradley told once before: "Being part of the Undertones seemed to spin out our childhood". Indeed. While the great portion of british punk were undeniable attracted to fashion and politics, they had no tricks: dressed like factory workers on TV appearances, and a black and white album cover that shows them sat on a wall. This is the performance for the first ´Tones album, just reflecting their time and their native land. The urgent new wave meets punk rock, resulting in a classic piece with 14 tracks. "Family Entertainment", "Girls Don´t Like It", "I Gotta Getta", "Here Comes The Summer", a continuing tribute to all teens and their kicks, "Runnaround (She´s A)" are few examples of attitude in less than 2 min and few seconds more. Inevitably, in 79 Northern Ireland wasn´t any kind of heaven as seen by lots of people. But a simple record with a simple music has demonstrated their adolescence could be lived the same way. No matter the time or the place where it´s been. Let´s blame it on perfect pop. (8,0) (G.R.)
