THE JONESES (2010)--David Duchovny and Demi Moore play an ultra-cool couple, Steve and Kate Jones, who move into an upscale neighborhood with their perfect kids (Ben Hollingsworth and Amber Heard) and quickly become the most popular folks around. Everything they do and own inspires the neighbors to copy the Joneses, only the folks on the block dont know something: the Joneses are not a real family; they are a cell working for a mysterious megacorporation that pays these beautiful people to wear the finest clothes and sport the latest accessories so that everyone else will copy them--in other words, keep up with the Joneses. However, even a pretend family must sometimes deal with the same kinds of stress as a real family in this obscure indie effort, which is certainly interesting if not quite the laff fest Netflix says it is. Indeed, THE JONESES is a satire thats not particularly sharp, and while it isnt as funny as expected, its too light to pass itself off as a proper drama. Other than the uneven tone, though, its a perfectly watchable little flick, boosted by strong performances from the leads--two formerly big stars who just dont get to work enough these days, alas. Lauren Hutton shows up as their enigmatic boss, and Gary Cole and Glenne Headley, an always welcome screen presence, are the next-door neighbors whose efforts to keep up with the Joneses are the most extreme--and the most tragic.
