THE JUSTICE J.S. VERMA FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED The Supreme Court Lawyers Welfare Trust (SCLWT) is aimed at improving the welfare of the members of the Supreme Court Bar and was founded with a generous donation from Senior Advocate and Former Solicitor General R.F. Nariman, with the Late Justice J.S. Verma as the founder Chairman. Today, under his successor, Justice Mukul Mudgal, and with Trustees including Mr M.N. Krishnamani and Mrs Sadhana Ramachandran, the Trust aims to give wide-ranging support to younger and less privileged members of the Bar. The other trustees include Mrs Mamta Kachwaha, Advocate, Mr Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Advocate and Mr Raghenth Basant, Advocate. Instituted by the Trust in 2012, these Fellowships give a monthly scholarship of Rs 25,000 per month over 2 years and a Full Text Edition of SCCOnline to each of the Fellows. In order to be eligible for the annual Fellowships, candidates have to be lawyers with between 2 and 6 years experience litigating in the courts, and be committed to practise primarily at the Supreme Court. Applications are invited every year in September-October, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a panel of three Trustees, usually in November. The 2012 Fellows were Shivraj Gaonkar and Pallav Mongia, who are presently practising in the Supreme Court with Mr L. Nageswara Rao, ASG and M/s Karanjawala & Co., respectively. In 2013, after a rigorous interview process, Adit Subramaniam Pujari and Rohit Bhat were selected as the Fellows. Adit practises with Siddharth Aggarwal, Advocate, having completed a 2-year stint with the litigation offices of Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi after graduating in 2010 from W.B. NUJS, Kolkata. Rohit is in the Chambers of K.K. Venugopal, Senior Advocate, having graduated from University Law College, Bangalore in 2009 and worked with Vikas Mehta, Advocate on Record till June 2011. As the competition was very strong this year, and as the Trustees were unanimous about the excellent work being done by her, Jaikriti Sinh Jadeja was given a Special Fellowship. She has recently joined Gohil & Singh Law Chambers having completed a 3-year tenure with Balaji Srinivasan, Advocate on Record, and is a graduate of ILS Pune (2009) and National University of Singapore (2010). The awards were presented at India International Centre, New Delhi on 9-12-2013. Eastern Book Companys SCC Online has sponsored the research packages and continues to support the Trust. From 2013, the Trust has unanimously resolved that the awardees shall be known as the Verma Fellows in memory of the Founder Chairman.
