THE KINGS BIRTHDAY... THE KANGS BUSYDAY So I havent had a chance to describe the whirlwind last Thursday/Friday was... Thursday morning I woke up at 6:45 and got ready for work. My Mandy and I were both at work by 7:50 or so that morning. I did 4 hours at the real job and left from there with Kirk and Mama Bev on a 2 hour trek to Austin, TX for my first of two Chuys shows that evening. We arrived at the Arbor Trails Chuys with just enough time to set up my equipment and then rush across town to another Chuys (Barton Springs) where a sound company had set up sound for my first performance, scheduled for 5pm. I rush in, plug in my laptop and do an abbreviated sound check then bust into the restroom to turn into Elvis. This is where I envy the guys who already have the Elvis hair and burns. They put on the jumpsuits, maybe a little makeup and, boom! Start the show! My silly ass has to glue and tuck and tweak until I get as close as I can get to The King. This takes time. And with a photographer snappin away while I was preppin, it was definitely not a normal gigday. :) So the intro starts and I step out for two hours of Elvis Birthday goodness. With such a good (and early!) turnout, the place was HOT! But the crowd was really into the show and everything went off like a roman candle. Finished up the show around 7pm and had every intention of changing into my street clothes and heading back to the Arbor Trails Chuys for my second show. Nah. Everybody wants a picture with Elvis. And theres no way Im gonna deny pics. :) So I snap off some pictures, sign a few scarves and posters and bam! Out the door to the next show! We take the wrong exit and end up heading the wrong direction on Texas Hwy 1 (sorry, Mama! You were right! :) ) but, somehow, get turned around and arrive at the Arbor Trails Chuys at 7:40. Quick laptop hookup and straight to the mens room to get that jumpsuit back on and freshen it all up. 8pm we hit the intro and begin ANOTHER 2 hours of Elvis Birthday Love! Pics, posters, CDs and scarves being thrown about like panties at an Elvis show circa 1972. Just an incredibly good time! (BIG shoutouts to all of the folks who drove across town from the first show to the SECOND show... THAT is LOVE!) Wrap up that show a little after 10pm, peel out of the jumpsuit, the rings, the necklaces, the burns, the... everything, jump back into the civilian clothes, get paid, load out and out the door to hit Highway 71 towards home. Got home and in bed by 2:30 am. Having to be up at 5 am to be at work at 6, I decided to sleep in my clothes and shoes so I could sleep until the last second. Managed to drag myself out of the sack and to work ontime. So, yay! Then, I leave work at noon to be at an afternoon appearance in Houston as Elvis at 3pm. That show runs 3-4, with close to an hour of pictures, pay, breakdown and load out. Then a quick trip back home to spend a brief bit with the family and snatch about an hour nap. Then back on the road to set up for a 9pm J3 (Just Jimi Jam) at the Sammie J Hilton Londeens always fun Sammie Js! Sang the better part of 4 hours there and then, finally, thank you Lawd!.... Home. In that span: 7 hours drivetime, 9 hours singing/performing, 3 hours pics/autographs, 3 hours of costume changes, 8 hours of the Day Job, 3 hours of sleep, 1 hour family time, 1 gallon of McDonalds Sweet Tea, 2 servings (around 102) of Cheddar Goldfish, 18 gallons of gas, 3 kisses from my wifey, 2 hugs from each kiddo and approximately 150 Elvis songs. AND more hugs, smiles and cheers than I can count. Then, as icing on the cake, a 3pm Elvis Show the following Saturday in Houston. An incredibly fulfilling, fun, precious and profitable day in the life of Tha Kang. Insurmountable thanks to ELVIS PRESLEY and the God who created him. To everyone who supports the show, you are blessings all... THANK YOU! TCB4EVRZ!
