THE LATEST FROM THE COUNCIL. IM PUTTING A LIST OF QUESTIONS I THINK WE NEED TO BE ASKING AND FEEDBACK WE WOULD LIKE TO PUT FORWARD TOGETHER NOW AND WILL POST AS SOON AS I CAN: In a briefing session yesterday, City of Busselton Councillors discussed and have informally indicated a willingness to revisit a Council resolution made on October 22, 2014 relating to dogs on beaches. That resolution provided for consultation with the community on a set of proposals for when and where residents and visitors would be able to take their dogs onto beaches. It needs to be noted that the Council’s October decision was not a final decision, and had no impact on the situation on the ground until consultation was completed and the Council had considered community feedback. There was significant community concern that any new controls were to be implemented on 1 December this year, however, this is not the case. City of Busselton Mayor Ian Stubbs said a number of aspects of the October resolution had caused considerable community concern. Mayor Stubbs said; “We are listening, we are taking note of feedback and we are certainly prepared to revisit our earlier decision if a more workable and broadly acceptable solution presents. There does need to be a balanced approach to this issue, and I think the community is indicating we didn’t get that balance right with the proposals we adopted for consultation in October.” A late item on this matter will be presented to next week’s (26 November) Council meeting giving the Council an opportunity to modify the proposals adopted in October before formal consultation with the community takes place. It is expected that formal consultation will now not take place until February 2015, at which time there will be an opportunity for the community to be fully informed of the proposals and have their say before any final decisions are made. It is expected that the Council will adopt proposals that allow dogs to be taken onto more beach areas, more of the time than the proposals adopted in October. Over the coming summer, dogs are permitted on most beach areas, except the area near the Busselton Jetty and of course in National Parks. It is very important that people realise that even when their dog is off the leash it does need to be under effective control and they need to always clean up after their dog. Dog owners always need to be responsible and considerate.
