THE LITTLEST ANGEL Michael is an eight year old boy. A shepherd, living near Bethlehem, he thinks the world is just full of treasure and excitement. Under his bed is a wooden box and in it are some of his most precious things – white stones, blue egg-shells, a broken dog collar. Then, in pursuit of a white dove, he dies and goes to Heaven. His training to be an angel begins, but it all goes wrong. Michael is still too attached to his earthly life, his mother, his father, and his box. Conceding that Heaven wouldnt be Heaven without the things that bring us delight Michaels guardian angel allows him to fetch his box. He arrives back, just in time for the birth of Jesus. All the angels are busy fashioning wonderful gifts for Him; a vision never before beheld, color never before seen, and music never before heard. Michael is stumped. He doesnt have anything to compare, just a box full of stuff he affectionately calls the treasures of the earth. But he loves it too much to give away! Then comes a moment. You know … that moment when you realise what is right and you content yourself to do it. Thats the moment Michael becomes an angel, the Littlest Angel. He hides his box behind grander gifts, but God knows it is there, and God knows how much it means to him. The gift that meant more to Michael than anything is raised into the sky. It shines above the earth, and shepherds see it as the Star of Bethlehem, signifying the arrival of the gift that God loved. There comes a moment … when we lay aside our own desires and willingly align ourselves with God’s will; our love with His love. That’s the moment when God surely smiles, and we become the closest thing possible to an angel on earth – no matter what size we are! Those Little Extras • The Littlest Angel was written as a radio script. It didn’t get produced. • Hallmark Hall Of Fame produced a musical TV special of the story in 1969. • Fred Gwynne, Herman from The Munsters, played Michael’s guardian angel. • Loretta Young made a recording of The Littlest Angel for Decca Records. To The Gift-Giver What expensive purchase could compare with life? How far would you have to stretch a credit card to purchase pure love? Lord, we know the gifts worth having are from you and there is nothing we can do in return – except share those gifts with your other children! Will you smile then? Like a Father who sees His kids turning out all right?
