THE LORD’S WAY III. “Man Proposes God Disposes” Proverbs 16:17-24-The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul. [The Christian is to depart from evil; they are to be separated from the world/evil; remember this thought. Christ came to bring division not peace. Even though we will never be perfectly sinless, a Christian cannot continue in sin (live in evil) and save their soul.] 18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. [The base cause of why man is in a fallen state, is pride. Pride is the main ingredient (principal sin, if you will) of self-righteousness; in fact it was pride and self-righteousness that nailed Christ to the cross.] 19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. [For one this verse/proverb characterizes Christ. Christ may have warned the Pharisee’s, and spent time with them, in doing so, but He was hanging out and associating with them all the time. Christ did not choose the rich, the religious, the powerful, to be His disciples, He chose fisherman, and a tax-collector; the small, the despised, and the foolish things of this world.] 20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he. [If you apply the Word of God to your life, you will find good: if you trust in God you will be happy.] 21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. [The only way one can be wise in heart, is by letting the Bible be its teacher and guide.] 22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. [If you can understand the Bible, that is been given Godly discernment, then you have a wellspring of life.] 23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. [“The wise person is the one who knows the Bible, and is, therefore, wise in the things of God, which are the things that really matter.] 24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. [Pleasant words are kind words, which have their foundation in the Bible.]
