THE LOVERS OF TERUEL / LOS AMANTES DE TERUEL, 1837. JUAN EUGENIO HARTZENBUSCH “THE Lovers Of Teruel” is a theatre play written by Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch in 1837. The author writes down a famous Spanish legend: DON Diego Macilla is a young gentleman from Teruel who is in love with Isabel de Segura. But don Diego is poor and for this reason he is not accepted by Isabel´s parents. Thus, Isabel´s parents tell don Diego to become rich within six years and one week; if he gets it he will marry their daughter then. So don Diego went to fight the infidels (Muslims or every non Christian human beings capable of breathing and walking) to get fortune. He was a brave soldier, he became a rich man and after that he returned to Teruel. But he is taken prisoner by the Moors from Valencia and Zulima, the beautiful sultana, falls in love with him and don Diego rejects her. After that Zulima goes to Teruel in order to take revenge. Don Rodrigo de Azagra, a powerful man in Teruel, wants to marry Isabel de Segura too. Don Rodrigo gets some compromising letters for Isabel´s mother. Then he blackmails Isabel´s family and he gets to marry with Isabel. Meanwhile Don Diego gets his freedom at last and he runs to Teruel. But near Teruel some bandits (who are paid by Zulima) stop him while the wedding ceremony is taking place. Don Diego arrives at Teruel at last and he runs to see his girlfriend. But his former girlfriend has just married another man. That night, Diego sneaked into the bedroom of Isabel and her husband and gently awoke her. He pleaded to her, Kiss me for I am dying, and she refused, saying God would not wish me to deceive my husband. He begged her a second time but she said: For the love of Christ, I beg you to find another, and forget about me. If our love could not please God, then neither should it please me. He begged her one last time, saying that he was dying and wished for a final kiss. But still she refused. Upon hearing this Diego could not bear the separation between himself and his love, and with a sigh he died on the feet of his beloved Isabel. When she realized that he died, she shivered. She woke her husband, don Rodrigo, telling him that his snoring scared her and she wished to hear a story. And he did, and in return she told him her own story. She told him of Diego and how he lay dead beside the bed. They agreed on secretly burying him in the local church because the husband feared that he would be blamed for his death. The next day, during the funeral for Diego Marcilla, Isabel showed up dressed in her wedding dress. She proceeded to walk to the front of the church and place a kiss on the man whom she had refused but in doing so Isabel died, falling prostrate on the body of the man whom she loved. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “LOS AMANTES DE TERUEL”, 1837. JUAN EUGENIO HARTZENBUSCH “LOS amantes de Teruel” es una obra de teatro escrita por Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch en 1837. El autor recoge una famosa leyenda española: DON Diego Macilla es un joven caballero de Teruel que está muy enamorado de Isabel de Segura. Pero don Diego es pobre y por esta razón no es aceptado por los padres de Isabel. Así los padres de Isabel le dicen a don Diego que se haga rico en el plazo de seis años y una semana; si lo consigue entonces podrá casarse con su hija. Por tanto don Diego se va a luchar contra los infieles (musulmanes o todos aquellos seres humanos capaces de caminar y respirar que no fueran cristianos) para conseguir fortuna. Él fue un soldado valiente, logró convertirse en un hombre rico y después de eso parte para Teruel. Pero es cogido prisionero por los moros de Valencia y Zulima, la bella sultana, se enamora de él y don Diego la rechaza. Después de esto Zulima marcha a Teruel despechada para tomar venganza. Don Rodrigo de Azagra, un hombre poderoso en Teruel, quiere casarse con Isabel de Segura también. Él obtiene unas cartas comprometedoras para la madre de Isabel y chantajea así a la familia hasta que ésta acepta que pueda casarse con su hija. Mientras tanto don Diego obtiene su libertad al fin y corre a Teruel a encontrarse con su amada. Pero cerca de Teruel unos bandidos (pagados por Zulima) retienen a don Diego mientras se está celebrando la boda de su querida Isabel. Don Diego llega a Teruel al fin y corre a ver a su novia. Pero su antigua novia es ahora una mujer recién casada con otro hombre. Esa noche Diego entra con sigilo en el dormitorio de Isabel y su esposo y con suavidad la despierta. Él le ruega un beso: ”Bésame que me muero”, dice. Pero ella rechaza y le contesta: “No quiera Dios que yo falte a mi marido”. Don Diego le suplica una segunda vez y ella le responde: “Por la pasión de Jesucristo os suplico que busquéis a otra, que de mí no hagáis cuenta. Pues si a Dios no ha complacido, tampoco me complace a mí.” Por tercera y última vez él le suplicó un beso, indicando que se estaba muriendo y deseaba un último beso, pero también por tercera vez ella lo rechazó. Al escuchar esto Diego no pudo soportar más la situación de separación entre él y su amor, y con un suspiro murió a los pies de su amada Isabel. Cuando ella comprendió que él había muerto un escalofrío recorrió su cuerpo. Despertó a su marido, don Rodrigo, indicándole que sus ronquidos la atemorizaban y que deseaba escuchar un relato. Don Rodrigo le contó un relato y a continuación ella procedió a contar su propia historia. Le contó todo sobre Diego y cómo él yacía muerto al lado de la cama. Ambos estuvieron de acuerdo en enterrar a Diego secretamente en la iglesia local, ya que Rodrigo tenía miedo de que le acusaran a él de su muerte. Al día siguiente, durante el funeral por Diego Marcilla, Isabel se presenta vestida en traje de novia. Procede a caminar hacia donde está el cuerpo de Diego y le da el beso que la noche anterior le negó. Pero, al hacer esto, ella muere y queda postrada en el cuerpo del hombre que ella amó.
