THE LOWLY MAINTENANCE MAN I have been blessed, not with fame or fortune, just a great job. For over thirty years I have been a maintenance man, not like the two in the video. They are apartment maintenance guys. I did industrial, commercial, and “institutional” work. I installed an ice machine in an insane asylum once, some believe I should have stayed. Fixed the air conditioning where they did the first heart transplant in this area at CMC. Fixed the air in neo natal intensive care, where the premee babies lay and the morgue. Worked for college professors and college kids fixing whatever they broke. Fixed hundreds, if not thousands, of broken machines with electrical problems over the years. Repaired large building air conditioning units so you could run your job, make money, just be comfortable at work. Maintenance guys ( and girls) are like cops and first responders. Only difference, we don’t save or risk our lives on a daily basis. Unless it’s our own, when doing high voltage electrical work. You don’t think about or appreciate us until you need us. All of you, most likely, will at one time or another give us a call. Then we become “the man or woman” for an hour or so. But thats cool we know you appreciate the work we do, maybe even respect us, plumbers anyway. I was a heating and air guy working with a plumber at a college in North Carolina. The man had a strong stomach, a necessity in that type of job. He was a “licensed plumber” and very proud of his work. He could dig a hole, go down into a sewer pit, when main building pipes would break, could stand in raw sewage all day. Do that and at the same time eat cheese crackers and drink a coke during his breaks. “College kids, college people, respect plumbers,” he said “Watch them get out of my way.” At the time,We were walking down a building hallway on campus. He had just unstopped and repaired an overflowing toilet, was a little damp from the overflow. Had some “mysterious stains” on his clothes. He began swinging a wet plumbers helper and a toilet auger, he held in his hands, as he walked. Sure enough everyone, I mean everyone, including me, got out of his way!!! Call us, maintenance and repair people if you need us (and you will need us one day) and don’t forget to pay. Thanks for the Reading
