THE LUTHIER WHO LIVED IN MY VHS CASSETTE. I was rummaging in some old boxes in storage, and came across some old VHS Cassettes. I popped in this old VHS Cassette ( yes I still have a VHS Video recorder and I just bought a new Vinyl record player - Those things are magical to me.) , That Video brought back a whirl of memories. Here is the story behind that old VHS Cassette. In 2000, I got a call from a friends friend from India named Glen Desmier, After chatting with him for a few, he said his brother Dale Desmier was in the US and looking to visit NYC. His brother Dale, had a collection of hand crafted guitars he had made in India at home and was looking to get to know more people who would be interested in hand crafted guitars. He asked me if his brother could come down to NYC and stay at my place for a bit , and If I could introduce him to musicians and other people who might be able to invest in his brothers talent as a luthier & inventor. A Few short weeks later, a cab pulled up and Dale Desmier arrived at my doorstep with a whole bunch of baggage Later on in that evening I asked him about what was in these bags. He then proceeded to show me these amazing versatile hand crafted guitars and instruments ,which seemed to have been meticulously designed and laboriously crafted. He had built each and every one of them , designed them - all on a shoe string budget . I soon learnt - Dale Desmier is an amazing musician too, he not only created brand new ways of looking at guitar design but also plays them like a virtuoso He seemed to have wanted certain freedom from standard guitars , envisioned them , built them and then mastered them. I was very impressed with the different styles and genres these guitars/ bass & other amalgamated instruments could be played and the doors they opened up to playing A week later I spread the word around and decided to talk to a friend , mentor Bill Bennet who was the barinchild of The Wall Streem Jam ( a musicians networking club) in downtown manhattan. We took Dales instruments to the Wall Street Jam, and when Bill saw what he had he was just amazed at the ingenuity and the frugality of how these guitars were made and designed. Most of the parts of these instruments were made with salvaged materials , including spokes of bicycles (speed king bicycle ) , toothpaste covers and re cycled wood and wire from whatever was available. Bill got him a job at Tribeca Blues Bar in Lower manhattan and things were looking up for this great inventor. A couple of weeks later I got him to play at the Road House on Murray Street (a great live band venue , long gone by now) He did a 20 minute set and displayed his instruments and played some intricate amazing stuff on each and every one of these very unusual fret desidned instruments. He walked away with a standing ovation at the Road House. A few weeks later Dale Desmier had to travel back to India and that was the last I ever saw of him. While leaving he did leave behind a VHS Cassette of his work. It got lost in an old box and was forgotten, till today. I did find these other videos on you tube of Dale Desmier (Just you tube Dale Desmier), was pleased to see him still honed in at his craft of building versatile instruments. This dude deserves all trhe credits and accolades for his genius and for his passion and perseverance for what he loves. He loves building Out-Of-The-Box Instruments, re-inventing classic guitarsem , Creating instruments in ways no one would think possible and also mastering and playing them. As you can tell Im a huge fan of this dudes labour of love and passion for building and playing. Hope you enjoy the video as much as I did..
