The Mauis dolphin is a critically endangered subspecies of the Hectors dolphin, also known as the Hobbit dolphin and is the smallest most intelligent and rarest of all dolphins. Their habitat is found only on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand.. It is estimated that only 55 Mauis dolphin exist and numbers appear to be declining. Gill netting & trawling have caused the demise of these dolphins from approximately 1874, in the 1970s to just 55. Three thousand square kilometers or 1158.3mi² of the marine sanctuary of the Mauis dolphin habitat is to be opened up for oil exploration (seismic testing). Despite evidence from the scientific community that seismic testing (involving multiple underwater explosions) is a death sentence to dolphins and other cessations, Conservation minister Nick Smith and Energy Resources minister Simon Bridges continue on their course to wipe out Mauis Dolphin. The New Zealand government is refusing to protect the small population of these dolphin. Our tourism industry, which relies on a clean, green imagery, could be devastated.
