THE MOST CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT QUESTION: What are your thoughts about living in a highly dysfunctional or maladaptive environment? One which is cutoff... almost entirely from the natural impulse to change or respond to the urgency of dis-ease/tension, and a cornucopia of stress related events. Is it possible for one in such an unfriendly environment to still develop themselves and not be thrown off by the unending bombardment of triggers being thrown at them? Or in this case, is it critical for one to change the environment realizing that there is nothing that can be done on a personal level to ameliorate the external malignancy? This has been something which has been contemplated and juggled for a long time, wondering from the most deepest level if there is a resolution. Thanks. ANSWER: On the surface value of this question the immediate response would be that one should seek environment which is conducive for realization of ones greater potential. Otherwise a lot of ones life energy would be spend on neutralizing, or opposing what is not conducive and therefore resulting in the lack of energy for the inner transformation. Simply because like increases like, and if there is a certain quality dominating ones given environment that quality is harder to overcome in order to evolve. That being said, this dilemma is not that straightforward, and if we are to presuppose with certainty that only conducive environment is necessary for spiritual evolution of a soul it means that we limit Consciousness by cause-n-effect and space-time conventions. Yet we know well [from direct experience and scriptural inference] that Consciousness is non-local. Which means realization of the Self is not limited by this or that limitation no matter how contracting it may appear on the outside. Moreover history is full of examples when the least favorable circumstances not only failed to obstruct human consciousness [soul] in its desire for unfoldment, but actually served as that necessary pressure to trigger the unfoldment itself. In other words when the impulse to grow [in whatever way that is understood] is strong enough, that impulse has the support of nature needed to move mountains. Or to move against the unending bombardment of constantly re-activated [psychic] tendencies. To that we need to add that with every qualitative change in ourselves [in our soul] our environment is undergoing qualitative changes as well. This is where the validity of certain tried and tested methodology of consciousness is a must in order to utilize certain hidden powers so as to make some kind of move. Any move, for that matter, in the right direction where weve introduced tools [such as meditation, etc] to activate consciousness in order to work from the subtler level of reality. Now, [and this perhaps is the most important insight!] unless we have made that initial move to overcome the limitations of our immediate environment, even when we go elsewhere the very principles of karmic dependency would imply we are taking that environment with us no matter where we go. In other words, our environment is a reflection of our state of consciousness, one way or another. To conclude we could draw parallels to the prevalent values in our culture at large. Your initial question–with all its limitations named–could be applied to the overall state of affairs when it comes to the realization of souls potential during this darker phases in our collective history. Lets face it, the present moment culture [with all its governing institutions, including religious ones] does not support this process known as realization of souls birthright as Being-Consciousness-Bliss. Hence we are left to our own devices to find our way home from the web of constantly uploaded illusions which most of us collectively download and uphold as if there are no other alternatives. Well, there are! There is this field of infinite possibilities deep within the domain of each and every one of us. Make that move right here, right now, regardless of what are the constrains and the limitations of your environment. Make that unwavering intent to reach the light of your own Self, and watch how your environment changes with it. May all this limitations be the springboard for your souls rise to where the only boundary is boundless and unconditional love. Basically, give your Self a chance in your own being, for no matter how paradoxical it may sound, the most conducive environment is nowhere, but veiled deep within our heart.
