THE MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF HAITI MOVIE AWARDS Many would concur and I inclusively that the first year of the movie awards was by far the best of all in terms of presentation, coordination and hosting. According to many people Actress Betty Lemite and Actor Smoye Noisie had eloquently, elegantly and professionally kept the mature audience entertained as the two effortlessly showed that their hosting style was not done in an impromptu fashion unlike the 2013 awards ceremony. In the second year at the John Hancok Hall the saga continued once more with Actress Betty Lemite and the legendary TV and Radio icon Mr. Bob Lemoine who performed on stage as expected by an audience who knew all too well of his career resume. Not only they were entertaining, but also they were prepared as they addressed all their invited guests by their names as much as they knew of what was coming as the next act on stage. For two years in a row Betty and her co-hosts didn’t fail to recognize and acknowledge the hard work and the know how of Fabienne Eliacin who during those two years coordinated the MPAH Movie Awards where as this year she was not even mentioned providing the fact that she was present in the room and the same goes for former host and actress Betty Lemite. Personally I would be the first to admit that such an idea or the concept of honoring the work of actors, scriptwriters, editors, directors, filmmakers and the likes is the best that the MPAH founder could ever created. However, the question that has been spiraling after the third year in many people’s mind is, what is the main objective behind these ritual events? Some people have even speculated that the yearly event appears to be a façade behind a hidden agenda since the services rendered during the three consecutive years haven’t correlated with the MPAH Movie Awards’ title. The definition of The Motion Picture Association of Haiti Movie Awards should only be geared toward what it is intended for instead of letting people in the loop. A motion picture is a moving image sometimes accompanied by an audio track be it a short film, a documentary, an infomercial, a commercial or a feature film etc. Any organization, which that is formed to recognize and honor the artistic work and craft of talented individuals may and should never be used for personal gain or as a venue designed to acquire self-acclamation by applause rather than by merit or by ballot. The question herein that many want to know is whether there is a pool of jury with qualifying members that formed the MPAH with a degree in filmmaking, communication or anything that relates to the subject matter. Furthermore, what is the criteria, which that the organization based on in order for its members to determine the level of excellence from one artwork to the next? Those are again the battery of questions that the people of Boston who monetarily and religiously support the yearly event deserve to know as well as those who have acquired a working knowledge in theatre, art and moviemaking etc. including those who are in remote areas like New York, Miami and New Jersey just to name a few. I and the majority of people like and want to support the wonderful concept of The Motion Picture association Of Haiti’s Movie Awards or any other types of Awards where artists’ work and their endeavors are respectfully evaluated and fairly rewarded. But we also believe that the selective and the scrutinizing process of an artist work should undergo a legitimate and a fair trial process by a group of people who have paid their dues in the field and have the right qualification to blindly select a winner based on his outstanding accomplishment without being influenced by the C.E.O. or the founder on the decision-making. In this year’s MPAH Movie Awards ceremony the intentions to put forth a wonderful event for its third anniversary could be patently seen and appreciated by anyone who could point out the tremendous efforts of those who volunteered their time and energy, but as the ceremony started the coordination lack thereof emerged starting from the technical glitches to the impromptu free style of hosting. Hollywood Actress Garcelle Beauvais and Jessica Geneus were amongst the many distinguished and invited movie celebrities as well as producers and filmmakers who didn’t get the proper introduction to their respective fans during the ceremony. To add more fuel to an existing flame one of the Masters of the Ceremony made it aware to an unsatisfying audience that Ms. Beauvais didn’t in fact get the proper acknowledgment for her achievements in the movie industry business. Needless to say that the invited guest was in the room to see for her eyes from the giant video monitor that the red carpet’s host innocently didn’t know that the video feed revealed him mentioning not to let the audience know of their technical difficulties where everyone started laughing. Shortly after it was the opening sequence with the national anthem songs from both countries Haiti and the United States. The singers have done the anthems’ interpretation justice with their voice and the audience approved. The absence of Fabienne Eliacin this year has been very apparent as the group of volunteers couldn’t get the proper guidance in order to help make this year’s ceremony presentation better or the same as the two previous ones. The coordination lack thereof has resulted into an on-stage mayhem and a tasteless theme, which poorly displayed a flirtatious improvised act throughout the night between the unprepared hosts. As a result the audience was asked on numerous occasions to applaud for something that was not naturally earned. After few inquiries the ridicule became the most popular on stage. And the pre-recorded video clips outlining all the contenders and the departed ones were very much on point, but it was the unrehearsed technical team and the volume settings that were too loud for the speakers and the audience’s ears to handle. Therefore, it was rather a mere torture than it was entertaining. Despite some of the encounters there were also some good moments where the dancers and the solo artists gave a satisfying performance. The audience was maturely civil and comprehensible providing that the fans came out to see Garcelle Beauvais and some of their favorite movie stars. It was also a one night out in the town to see old friends and showcasing their wonderful attire on the red carpet through the cameras’ flashlights. Based on the MPAH Movie Awards’ title one would undoubtedly believe that the event was strictly about Haitian moviemakers being rewarded for their hard work and achievements. Filmmaker and Haitian cinema icon Jacques Roc didn’t get any acknowledgement amongst all the other celebrities. He was denied a few minutes to be on stage and talked about his famous “Pluie D’Espoir” film that got pirated during the editing process. A related topic about movie piracy that he thought would have been educational to the moviegoers, but the time slot was granted instead to an African singer who performed two songs in a raw while taking additional time to give a cultural dance lesson on stage to former Miss Haiti/co-host of the event. For three consecutive years Mr. Roc didn’t miss the Haitian Movie Awards, but for him to pass unnoticed in a movie related event made for Haitians filmmakers was a slap in the face. At last many VIP and non-VIP fans came to have their pictures taken with the Hollywood Actress Miss Garcelle Beauvais who didn’t waste anytime to find her way out of the building after receiving her MPAH Award, which resulted to our beloved Actress Jessica Geneus missing the opportunity of posing with her movie idol. Hopefully The Motion Picture Association of Haiti Movie Awards will make a thorough evaluation of the past three award ceremony events and correct all the apparent flaws so that the years to come will be much more successful. -Widmack Belot On Camera.
