THE MURROW BOYS: Edward R. Murrow was hired by CBS in 1935 and went to London in 1937 as its Director of European Operations, but the impending war thrust him overnight into the position of European news correspondent. It defined his career. With the full support of CBS News Director Paul White, Murrow hired a crack team of correspondents and turned CBS Radio into the most authoritative source of war news in the U.S. This team of war reporters came to be known as The Murrow Boys, and they were his closest friends and associates. They all shared Murrows convictions for journalistic integrity and thoughtful, incisive reporting. Many of these men stayed with CBS News for their entire careers. The best known of the Murrow Boys were: * Paul White, who headed CBS News from 1930 to 1954. * William L. Shirer, who was fired from CBS in 1947 and later wrote The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. * Eric Sevareid, who covered the fall of France and the Blitz of London. * Larry LeSueur, who covered the Blitz, and the battles in the Soviet Union and France. * Charles Collingwood, who covered the Blitz, North Africa and France. * Howard K. Smith, who covered Germany, Switzerland and France. * Bill Downs, who covered Russia, France, the Normandy invasion, the Netherlands and Germany. * Cecil Brown, who covered Rome, Eastern Europe, Singapore, and North Africa. * Richard C. Hottelet, who covered Great Britain, France and Germany and made the first broadcast of the D-Day invasion. * Douglas Edwards joined CBS in 1942 and worked with Murrow in London at the end of the war. * John Daly covered the news from London as well as the North African and Italian fronts. The Murrow Boys by Stanley Cloud and Lynne Olson (1996) is an excellent read.
