THE MUSIC OF SATYAJIT RAY: WESTERN, INDIAN, RABINDRA, AND… As we know, Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) started composing his own music for films from ‘Teen Kanya’ (1961) onwards, but before that he had worked with Pandit Ravi Shankar (Apu Trilogy – Pather Panchali, 1955; Aparajito, 1956; Apur Sansar, 1959), Ustad Vilayat Khan (Jalsaghar, 1958) and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (Devi, 1960) The video (as in the link given here) is not of an excellent quality nor is it complete but it will give you (if not seen already) some crucial insights into Ray’s upbringing into a deeply familial-musical environment, his ideas about employing background score to films, his decision to compose music for his own films, his way of writing notation and conducting, et al. Produced by the NFDC, the 90-minute, fairly elaborate documentary film, ‘The Music of Satyajit Ray’ was directed by Utpalendu Chakraborty in 1984. i had the good privilege of meeting Satyajit Ray at his 1/1 Bishop Lefroy Road, Kolkata residence twice in the past and recently meeting his son Sandip at the same house, still strongly and intensely making you feel the versatile maestro’s presence.
