THE MYTH OF THE “able administrator”: I remember during emergency, Sanjay Gandhi had become popular for his “fast implementation of development projects”. The most cited example of his efficacy was removal of all encroachment shops from Jama Masjid area, mercilessly overnight. But two decades later I found a middle class engineer who was Collector Jabalpur do much more in his mild mannered persuasive style. He holds a record for removal of hundreds of “religious constructions” to widen roads. He even convinced a mosque to push back its century old boundary wall. So administration is not about autocracy. And when Sanjay exercised his “power” in other fields, he became the most dreaded and hated figure. “Loh Purush” of BJP went underground. Ordinary govt. employees were denied annual increments unless they brought a “target” numbers for family planning operations. It is rumoured that even under-sixteen and over-sixty were forcibly sterilized to meet the targets. An ex-BJP leader has said Modi’s style reminds him of the Emergency days. Even a supposedly pro-Modi Economic Times says, “The autocratic, authoritarian style of Modi has been visible in the selection of candidates…”.It has also been visible in his attitude to “outside Gujarat” settlers. Friends, countrymen! I am not here to ask you to vote for AAP – but if there is 1% chance of Modi becoming an autocratic egomaniac, CAN WE RISK GIVING HIM ABSOLUTE POWER?
