THE NERD.... Written by Larry Shue Presented by The Hartford Players at the Schauer Arts and Activities Center Directed by Fred Wittenberger Set in Terre Haute, Indiana in late 1979, The Nerd centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his 34th birthday party. However, Rick’s awkward manner and inappropriate behavior throw the occasion into a shambles. It turns out that Rick is a stupid “nerd” who overstays his welcome with a vengeance. ________________________________________ Open Auditions: November 17 & 18, 2014 7:00 8:30pm Private auditions can be arranged with the director for those unable to make the open audition times. No conflicts accepted for Performance Dates or the week before Opening. Roles Available: 4 men, 2 women, 1 child. • Willum Cubbert (male, mid-30s). Willum is an architect, currently designing a hotel for Mr. Waldgrave, and a pushover. He’s kind and intelligent, likable and sincere, unexciting and set in his ways but Tansy says he “could use a little gumption.” He lacks the backbone to stand up for himself • Tansy McGinnis (female, about Willum’s age). A smart woman who is as attracted to Willum as he is to her, but who has been offered her dream job as a television weather forecaster in Washington, D.C., and feels guilty for leaving Willum behind. Idealistic, perky, and just as kind as Willum. Tansy is bubbly, wry, and definitely her own woman. • Axel Hammond (male, about Willum’s age). Willum’s best friend and Tansy’s ex. Dry, wise-cracking, irreverent, devil-may-care theater critic who has never done an anonymous favor for anyone. • Warnock Waldgrave (male, 35-60). Powerful, stern, and successful businessman, owner of eight hotels, totally lacking in imagination. The last time Waldgrave smiled was 30 years ago and then it was gas. Clelia Waldgrave (female, 30-50). Mr. Waldgrave’s high-strung, put-upon wife. She holds back all of her emotions, and only releases her stress when she can break “something small.” Thor Waldgrave (male, 8-10). The son of Warnock and Clelia Waldgrave is a bratty kid, who is a temperamental, loud, boisterous, irrepressible young monster. Spends most of the play hiding in a closet or bedroom. • Rick Steadman (male, mid-30s). Tactless, selfish, insensitive, aggravating, pointlessly dull and the worst houseguest ever. Note: The actor playing Rick Steadman will be playing 3 parts (Rick, Kemp, and Red) and must be able to disguise his voice as Rick and Red. *The part of Thor, though written for a boy can be played by either a girl or boy For more information, please contact fred@wittenbergerbus or call 262-673-3777.
