THE NETWORKS OF CRIME; SECURITY BEGINS WITH YOU; This is not fiction. Its my own private experience. Ill never, ever forget the morning of 2nd, April, 2002. I was living off Kabarnet Road, off Ngong road, Jamhuri crescent to be precise. I was operating a small medical centre in Kibera, just behind the DOS office/chiefs camp, not far from Marie stopes. Having overworked the previous night, I spent the night in the house of Jared, my friend and my laboratory technologist. It was past mid-night when we retired to bed. I was woken up by the Muslim call to prayer in a nearby mosque at or around 5.00am. It was raining heavily and so I borrowed Jareds jacket. Then the unexpected happened; Just as I was negotiating the first corner near Marie Stopes, Two strange creatures, yes, creatures appeared from the dark, wielding machetes and swords and dared me to try to run away. I had no choice but to comply~ I raised my hands up and surrendered. The gang of three ransacked my pockets I had only Ksh 120.00 in my pocket and a Motorolla T190. A one hundred shillings note and a Ksh. 20 coin. They disappeared with the phone and the Ksh 100.00 and gave me back the Ksh 20.00 coin. They also disappeared with the leather jacket belonging to my friend Jared that Id used to cover myself from the rain. They then left without hurting me. Like many Kenyans would do, I never bothered to report the matter to the police. Days and weeks passed. On 7th may, more than a month after the incident, at around 5.00pm, my laboratory technologist Jared entered my office in haste and called me~ apparently hed noticed a young man wearing a leather jacket that resembled his that was robbed from me on that fateful 2nd April. I took sometime to get out and by the time I got there, the guy had walked away. Less than ten minutes later, the young man passed outside the clinic again and Jared cunningly lured him inside the clinic then into my office. Once inside my office, we locked the door to ensure the young man didnt escape. Jared then ordered the young man to remove the jacket, examined it and positively identified it as his That had been robbed from me. I made haste and reported the matter to the Kibera AP camp and the guy was picked up by the police in a few minutes. It was around 6.30 pm and so the police instructed me to follow up the matter the following morning. I was at the police station by 7.30 Am the following day. I was deeply shocked by what I found; already 4 other people were in custody in relation to my case. Others were still being brought in as police interrogated the suspect. Thanks to police interrogation and action, the police had a total of 13 suspects in custody by mid-day in relation to the robbery. The other suspects were picked up after being mentioned by the first suspect in relation to handling the Motorolla T190. Among the suspects included both parents of the suspects, his 2 sisters, three aunties his only brother. The stolen phone apparently changed hands from the mother, father, brother, friends and was then sold to someone who travelled with it to Kisumu. It landed a whole nuclear and extended family into a police cell. family Desperate to secure their release, the group made frantic calls to trace the phone and finally the police were given an assurance that the phone would be in Nairobi the following morning. The police tricked them that once my phone was recovered, theyd be set free. That wasnt to happen. The person who delivered the phone from kisumu was also locked in and made the 14th suspect. The bunch of suspects now included a whole nuclear family and several members of the extended family~ Uncles, untie and cousins. WHATS MY POINT HERE? The war on crime will never, ever be won if we continue hiding criminals among us; Police questioning revealed the first suspect and the brother as hardcore suspects. Both parents were also aware that their sons were criminals but did nothing~ They contained benefiting from crime and urging the criminals on. A search of their houses in Makina , Kibera revealed most of their items in their house were stolen. Two loaded pistols were recovered hidden in a mattress in the parents bedroom. Yes, the parents knew their sons were criminals and continued encouraging them. Thats the kenya were living in, where the end justifies the means, where criminals live among us and we protect them. That way, we can rest assured crime will never be bit rid of. I rest my case!
