THE NEW SPECIALLY ELECTED MPS Parliament endorsed four specially elected MPs yesterday (28/10/14). After taking the presidential oath of office, President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama submitted four nominees to Parliament for election in former cabinet ministers Messrs Kitso Mokaila, Kenneth Matambo and former Permanent Secretary to the President, Mr Eric Molale and a former judge Dr Unity Dow. The four got the nod, via secret ballot; garnering 38 votes each while two other candidates submitted by the opposition in Mr Johnson Motshwarakgole and Ms Sennye Kono got 20 votes. Mr Molale was due to retire from public service in December this year after the end of an illustrious public service career that started in 1981 as assistant district officer in Tsabong. He served as a permanent secretary in the then Ministry of Local Government before he moved to the Office of President in 2003. Mr Mokaila was first elected to Parliament in 2004 and was appointed Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism the same year. In 2012, he was appointed Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, a position he held until the end of the tenth Parliament. Dr Dow is a former judge, having been the first woman to be appointed a High Court Judge in the country. She is a renowned human rights activist and a writer who writes strongly about women’s struggles for equality and justice in Botswana. She is also a member of the International Women’s Rights Watch. Mr Matambo joined Parliament as specially elected MP in 2009. He was later appointed Minister of Finance and Development Planning, a position he held until end of the 10th Parliament. (BOPA)
