THE OATH Long time ago in the village of no name, the people know no other way to live than to customarily consult the gods of their ancestors. They believed that the fate of the people depended on these gods the same gods that had protected their forefather and kept the land of safe and productive. The festival of the land was an annual event to appease the gods of the land. Led by the high priest, the king and the people would go to the village shrine bearing burn offerings from slaughtered animals requested by the high priest who stood as an emissary between the people and the gods. Now that the festival was coming up once again, everyone in the village worked hard to make it a memorable one. Seated around King in his palace to discuss the festival was the council of elders, which comprised men appointed to oversee the welfare of the people. The king assured them that all the items needed by the priest to perform the annual rites had been provided and the people had no cause worry: once again the god the gods would spare their land from famine, sickness, untimely death and other afflictions. They were in debate about other matters concerning the village when one of the Kings servants ran into the palace and shocked everyone by rudely barging into the meeting. The King was about to curse him for disrespecting his presence and that of his chiefs when the servant let out the good news. "The queen has just been delivered of a child, he panted with excitement it’s a boy, my King! You have a son". the King jumped to his feet. He had looked forward to this day, the day everyone had thought would never come.
