THE OFFICIAL HURRICANE SEASON CLOSE TO AN END, BUT DOES IT MEAN IT REALLY ENDS? LA TEMPORADA OFICIAL DE HURACANES CERCA DE SU FIN, PERO, ¿SIGNIFICA QUE REALMENTE TERMINA? Many think that when the hurricane season is over, that they wont see anything tropical anymore after November but that is not true at all. The official hurricane season in the Atlantic starts on June first and ends on November 30, but that is in theory because in reality it can take place during the whole year. There are enough places in the Caribbean that can support tropical development during the whole year, at least the sea temperatures. Those together with temporarily other favoring factors can lead to tropical development. For example, the Tropical Storm Olga, that one formed on December 11, 2007 and crossed the island of Hispaniola, killing 40 people along its track. So the end of the hurricane season does not mean the end of tropical activity. Right now, we are watching closely the GFS models as those indicate a possible subtropical or tropical cyclone next week over the Caribbean, but it is yet TOO SOON to predict, as models are quite unreliable in the long term predictions, everything can still change, but we will watch it and inform you! Muchos piensan que cuando la temporada de huracanes termina, no verán más nada tropical posteriormente a noviembre, pero eso no es cierto en absoluto. La temporada oficial de huracanes en el Atlántico comienza el primero de junio y termina el 30 de noviembre, pero eso en teoría, porque en realidad puede tener lugar durante todo el año. Hay suficientes lugares en el Caribe que pueden apoyar el desarrollo tropical durante todo el año, por lo menos las temperaturas del mar. Aquellos junto con otros factores que favorezcan el desarrollo temporalmente pueden conducir al desarrollo tropical. Un ejemplo es, la tormenta tropical Olga, que se formó el 11 de diciembre de 2007 y cruzó la isla de La Española, matando a 40 personas a lo largo de su trayectoria. Así que el final de la temporada de huracanes no significa el fin de la actividad tropical. En este momento, estamos observando de cerca los modelos del GFS ya que nos indican un posible ciclón subtropical o tropical la próxima semana sobre el Caribe, pero esto es todavía demasiado temprano para poderlo predecir, ya que los modelos son bastante poco fiables en las predicciones a largo plazo, por lo que todavía puede cambiar todo, pero vamos a observarlo y le informaremos!
