THE OLE GRAY MARE AINT WHAT SHE USED TO BE... Neither is anything else. I recently visited my home town in western Kentucky and the general surrounding area. Why? Because of the memories. As I drove into the entrance of the little town, I passed a now service station and other business where once stood a pallet plant where my father-in-law was once foreman. The Morning Star Drive inn is now just a restaurant, the super market no longer is, the Gulf service station where I once worked is now a much larger C store. The first motel is in shambles, the little grocery store where we high school kids once went for bologna sandwich rather than going to the school cafeteria, the high school building where I attended burned years ago, and a new modern complex now stands in its place. The funeral home has changed, the Baptist church I was baptized in has a modern building as well. The old Ford garage is now a part of the churchs ministries. The post office is no long the post office. The down town is now antique alley..(ha ha) The Clark Brothers, Red Front, Cowards, the Economy where I once sacked groceries and deliver by pick up truck is no more. Wades cafe, hamburger for 30 cents, 5 cents for a RC, the pool room next door where I was warned not to visit but did, the doctors office, drug store, etc are now just memories. New modern court house. The Chevy garage with a one car show room, the little gas station on the corner, the bank and drug store across the street, where I bought my first wrist watch by lay-away. The pool room where the shoe-shine man called out Some one next! is gone. The hardware hill is still there of course, but the old road is covered in trash, it once led to a over-head steel suspension bridge that a poor fellow in a truck tore down and lost his life. Near the old bridge was the place where the first police car the city ever had went in the river. The police thought we were swimming in our birthday suits (but we had on trunks) They left the car out of gear and rolled into the river. I viewed ii from my advantage point from a high tree. The swimming pool hill area is now so different with modern homes. The Sat night dances (or drunk fights) are no loner held at the old Legion hall. The Rain Bow Drive Inn where many a things took place... Is a junk heap now. The Barkley Lodge where my uncle Toms house set is just a faded memory. Then there is the church where I was saved. (Oak Grove Baptist) Now a new modern building where lots of came to know Christ, the old country school once stood near by where I went to the first grade no longer is. THINGS HAVE CHANGED, including me. The largest house I remember being build as a young boy would stand in a small portion of the shadow of a $3 million dollar house built 2 years ago about 5 blocks from ours. My cars are different, I dont have a crank, but 2 with remote starts 15 remotes for our TVs and Heating/AC a motorhome with more modern things than any house I grew up in. Im not complaining one bite, just giving thanks that God has blessed our past from which our roots were formed and impressions and guidance was given. MY CONCERN TODAY IS FOR OUR YOUTH GROWING UP IN OUR SOCIETY. WHAT WILL THEY REMEMBER? WHAT HYMNS WILL THEY SING? WHO WILL MAKE THE DEEP IMPRESSIONS ON THEIR LIVES???
