THE ONLY THING YOU MIGHT HAVE- THE CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SERVANT October 28, 2014 – Tuesday Reading II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT) All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. Reflection We live in a world where anything can happen. It’s probably always been like this, but it really comes home to roost nowadays. Viruses and terrorism are added to old-fashioned gangs and hatred. These are added to poverty, unemployment, and a lack of education. Citizens face troubles, and they look to us for solutions. They fear and, from us, they seek assurance. Yet you’re not sure what to do. There’s no ready-made, one-size-fits-all solution at the store. You have no cans of fear-repellent in the supply room. And so, you feel helpless at times in serving the public. At any particular moment, the only thing you might have to give is comfort. But many think that, when God comforts us, our troubles should go away. As Christians, we know that’s not the case. When God gives comfort, He gives encouragement, strength, and hope. These essential blessings help get us through our troubles and fears. As a Christian public servant, remember that comfort is not limited by budgets and policy. And, comfort may be the only solution God is calling you to provide at that particular moment – the same way He is providing you with comfort. The next time something happens at work and you feel helpless, reach for God’s comfort that rests upon you. Extend that blessing (encouragement, hope, strength) to the citizen before you. Comfort may be the only thing you might have, but don’t underestimate its power! Prayer God, I thank You for Your comfort and love. I pray, Father, that I am able to offer comfort to those I serve. I pray that You guide me in my daily walk at work, and that Your strength, hope, and encouragement exude through my desire to serve others. In Jesus Name, I pray. Amen.
