THE PARABLE OF THE CLOCK : Nature often reveals a vast spectrum of options and states between two or more endpoints. I would propose that the clockmaker RESIDES happily both within the clock house and without [a clock house by analogy more akin to Big Ben], that the Maker fashioned or constituted the elements of the housing and clock mechanism from his own self or mind, and as an multi-dimensional architect who may reside ‘within’ his own house from time to time [or be omnipresent], the Maker may wish to make interesting though perhaps subtle modifications and additions or deletions, all in accordance with the variations permitted by the rules of the original modularized design. Little is forbidden by the design (and many functions may ‘appear’ to be miraculous or ‘magic’ to the residents), but uniformity, conservation, elegance, diversity, and efficiency combine on multiple levels to manifest themselves as they are investigated as a coherent and marvelous integrated complexity, instruments within instruments within instruments, far beyond the meager imagination of the child-like residents. The many little rooms, nooks and even crawl spaces of the clock house are available for rent or occupation, and the transient residents happen to be children of the same Maker. The sensory devices and thinking mechanisms of the residents equip them with quite limited capabilities with regard to the entire design (which would, if briefly glimpsed, ‘blow their minds’). Rent payment is made in the form of doing good deeds for one’s fellow transient residents and serving as benign caretakers; each resident is equally privileged by ticket issued at birth, to live happily and to beneficently share the superfluity of resources and to enjoy the beauty of the clock. Indeed, the clock mechanism is strangely visible to residents only when the nearby lights are dimmed, and a translucent window, appearing as a blue veil by day, permits the residents to see the visible parts of the whole. Now, like those magnificent manifestations of the automated assembly lines appearing in our modern industrial world, the Maker initiated and implanted a variable form of automation in the design of the transients, call it evolution, where the machine itself is passively intelligent [a brilliant design made more brilliant by its ability to evolve, and even to become discreet depositories for what could be described as a god-like sentience and sense of self], and many tiny little nano-machines labor tirelessly according to their given programs, and some – the ‘children’ possess both programs and somewhat beguiling and mysterious functionalities known as ‘consciousness’ and ‘free-will’ – or perhaps ‘soul.’ . Some tenants are poor residents and do much harm to others, and sometimes to elements of the clock. “With much wisdom comes sorrow, but wisdom is better than folly just as light is better than darkness.” Attrib. to Solomon : youtube/watch?v=JmnYqKl1LzE Tree of Life
