THE PARADOX OF POWER I was asked recently, why are coaches in my group playing this game: - What I do not want you to know about me... (thank you Rich Litvin) I look to Yoda for this advice - It was Yoda that said - train yourself to let go of everything that you fear to lose. Let go of the fear of looking the fool, let go of the fear of not being good enough, let go of the fear of being vulnerable, let go of the fear of not looking good, let go of the fear of people judging you, let go of shame, let go of guilt, let go of the need to be the best, let go of perfection, let go of imperfection. Let go of it all. When we start by saying, What I dont want you to know about me... we are opening ourselves up to let go of everything. To let go of how people will judge us (actually how we judge and EDIT ourselves). When I was in Liberia, I opened an event for 400 teachers. I spoke first. Whatver I did would set the standard of the rest of the two days. My opening statement was: - What I do not want you to know about me is that my father was Chinese.. When I told my story of my three fathers, when I revealed the pain it had caused me, it gave others permission to reveal their stories of their fathers, of their brothers, and sons. When you are openly vulnerable as a coach it creates a supremely powerful and intimate space. When you go deep it allows your client to go deep. What I have learned is that that paradox of power is that the less you try and control it the more you have. Being vulnerable is a space of unlimited power - it is the easiest place to be, and yet can be the hardest to get to. Slow down, breath deeply, sink into your heart and let your words come. You will be surrounded by love, you are love, and that is all you need.
