THE PARTY GOES ON WHILE HORSES WAIT TO DIE. While everybody was - TopicsExpress

THE PARTY GOES ON WHILE HORSES WAIT TO DIE. While everybody was winding down their Cox Plate celebrations on Saturday, just 20 minutes from Moonee Valley Racecourse the discarded horses of the racing industry were waiting to die at a Melbourne knackery. Standing in the yards were nine standardbreds, eleven thoroughbreds and two others breeds. Some will say that no horses go to slaughter direct from the industry, but the horses at this particular knackery told a different story. Shasta Daisy, Quilberry Creek, Talmalmo and Babeset all came from the same trainer. Their owner pulled these 4 horses from sale last Friday at Echuca and gave them straight to the dogger. While Talmalmo had not raced for a few years, she had been used as broodmare since. The other 3 had not yet seen a racetrack. Shamrock Skipper also came direct from his trainer to the sales and was bought for slaughter. Communications with the trainer passed on to us have since revealed he was suffering from a fractured pelvis - an injury that no horse should go through a sale yard with. King Cobweb failed to finish in a jumps trial just a few months ago. He is just one of many who the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses says enters jumps racing as a cruel detour, not as a reprieve from slaughter. There were also 4 young unnamed but branded thoroughbreds, who were presumably bred for the industry but did not make the cut, alongside another racehorse who retired in 2013... This example is just one of many where horses are treated as disposable objects when no longer profitable, and exemplifies the need for a mandatory retirement plan for racehorses. Without it, day by day, horses will be loaded on to trucks to knackeries and abattoirs with nobody to help them. Just think about these names if you are considering going to the races this Spring Racing Carnival and ask yourself - Is the party really worth it?
