THE POLICE ARE HERE ..... NOW WHAT? You look out the window and see the task force vehicle outside. Men dressed in black military-like uniforms are yelling and crash through your door. Guns are pointed at you. Profanity is screamed at you. You are ordered to the floor. Its a drug raid. Here are some basic guidelines for such an incident from a criminal defense lawyers perspective. 1. Dont run. Prosecutors always argue that the guilty always run. Besides, the police will almost always screw something up in the search. 2. Cooperate with the orders of the officers in order to protect your own safety. 3. Dont be afraid of threats to arrest you. The police will often tell you that your cooperation will be best for you. In fact, your cooperation is often what is used to convict you. 4. Ask for a lawyer. Dont talk to the police without a lawyer being present. The presence of a lawyer is worth a night in jail because the lawyers presence may save you years in jail. 5. Dont talk. Keep your mouth shut. Running your mouth may very well convict you. 6. Remember that police officers lie to you in order to get you to talk. Dont trust them.
