THE POSSESSION OF MICHAEL KING is a trip. At the heart of a real and painful subject - trying to reconcile the problem of evil, and the existence of God who even remotely cares - there starts a descent into madness and evil that feels real, if only because of its sincerity, even when things go off the rails fairly quickly. Inviting the demonic into ones life in an attempt to prove or disprove them is not something I recommend, obviously, and Id say watching this makes the compelling case of why not to do that; but I like that some of whats done here is less like the cliche means most horror movies of this type go about letting the devil in. I like the conceit of this found-footage movie being a mans amateur but earnest attempt to disprove the supernatural, which makes the need for the cameras somewhat valid. It has some genuine scares, despite its modest budget, but I think where it excells is gaining sympathy for Michael King and then putting him through a spiritual ringer; that, and being just genuinely unsettling most of the time. Its not perfect, by any means, and sometimes lapses into silliness and cliche, but it does a lot of things right, and I think that counts for something. Also, ants. *shudder* youtube/watch?v=rIZbq7V2xvs
