THE POWER OF LOVE: One of the all-time great covers was Isaac Hayes’s rendition of “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” on his 1969 “Hot Buttered Soul” album. It was recorded in one take, as Hayes noted, “You know, I don’t plan it, I just rap, man. Cause if you go over it too many times it just gets mechanical.” John Schulian just shared this link on his Facebook page with the following comments: “Pull up a chair. This is going to take a while. Eighteen minutes and change, roughly the same amount of time it took all the other singers who recorded ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’ – from Glen Campbell to Marvin Gaye to Frank Sinatra to Johnny Rivers to Jimmy Webb, who wrote the song – needed to lay it down. But there was no arguing with Isaac Hayes, with his shaved noggin, bare chest and chains around his neck. He knew Shaft, for crying out loud. Better yet, he was Truck Turner. So if he wanted to make the song spin off into his own wild blue yonder, who, exactly, was going to say no?” Fellow writer Mike Downey added this comment to John’s post: “By the time HE got to Phoenix, everybody else was already halfway to Tucson.” Now, listen to Isaac Hayes bring it on down to Soulsville. https://youtube/watch?v=9bbdJSW3pvM
