THE POWER OF MUSIC DIPLOMACY............. After my hair-brained hair adventure a couple of days ago, I was taking my final taxi ride home when I spotted a beautiful park. A couple of turns later, I recognized where we were and realized it would take maybe 15 minutes at the most to ride to this beautiful park on our bikes. Yesterday was spectacular -- not too hot, nice breeze, the slightest beginning hints of fall in the air. We hopped on our bikes and went in search of the park. It was beautiful!! (Album to come). As we meandered through, we saw these two men playing instruments. One was playing a violin and the other the ancient Chinese predecessor to the violin. The man on the left was so funny. He saw us foreigners roaming around (the only ones we saw in the park the whole time we were there) and he motioned us over. She has a beautiful voice!, pointing to an elderly lady in a wheel chair. She should sing for you! He played a few notes on the violin, and the old lady smiled, but did not sing. Where are you from?, he asked a few seconds later. America, I replied. America!, his exclamation, and he began playing a very familiar tune, beaming with pride the whole time. We grinned, understandably, when you hear the tune. A few seconds later, his companion came up and started playing the same tune on his ancient instrument. I have to say, this is the most welcome I have felt in Beijing. Beautiful park, spectacular day, very nice man. Xie Xie, to him and his companions. ~~ D
