THE PRINCIPLE OF SOCIAL EQUITY SAYS YOU SHOULD STOP DROPPING MONEY IN CHURCH Youre a wicked person if you drop money in church. Simple! If you have any humanity left in you, you shouldnt be dropping any money — tithe, offering, group levies, project vows, etc — in church. You think you should give to God? Has God ever appeared physically to spend any money? God is supposedly nonphysical while money is physical: they have no relationship. Any money given in church, under the guise of being given to God, always ends up being spent by humans. So you need to 1st of all agree that when you give money in church, youre giving it to your fellow humans to spend on your behalf. But remember that business is anything that involves money. So I will be comparing churches & businesses here. What do they spend church money for? 1) For sustenance of the church: to pay the pastors of different cadres. Note that the workers in the units (ushers, choristers, Sunday school teachers, sanitation, etc), who are the major workforce of the church, dont get paid. They do 90% of running the church, volunteer their time, effort & resources, but they dont get paid. This money is also used in running the physical infrastructure of the church — buy sound equipment, buy air-conditioning units, pay utility bills, etc. In this aspect, the difference between a church & a regular business outfit is that in the latter, everybody that contributes to the sustenance of the business gets paid. 2) For expansion of the church: to establish more branches of the church, to build bigger church auditoriums (e.g., a 3 km × 3 km auditorium along Lagos expressway). To employ more pastors & thus get more members. In this aspect, theres no difference between a church & a regular business outfit. Everybody simply wants to expand — more parishes (branches), more pastors (paid staff) & more church members (customers). 3) For member welfare: cater to the widows, orphans, the needy, etc. However, my little experience says all churches spend less than 5% of their earnings on this. In fact, I know churches that dont spend a single kobo on this. They collect welfare offering but still use it for 1 & 2 above. Sad! In this aspect, commercial businesses & churches are the same. The former also engage in what they call corporate social responsibility & they spend a similar % of their earnings on it. Another similarity is that the essence of this is the same in both scenarios: churches undertake social responsibility to win souls & keep the souls theyve won while businesses (e.g., Globacom) undertake theirs to win more customers & keep the ones they already have. All na the same. In fact, church giving money to the needy is an emotional blackmail: the beneficiary thereafter feels somehow compelled to keep attending that church bcos he doesnt want to appear as an ingrate. & of course, some of them feel ashamed since a few people always know about the kind gesture. Someones life secret has been exposed to the public all in the name of welfare. I dont like church welfare. What should be the essence of giving? Were to give for equitable distribution of wealth. The best societies are characterized by this principle. But giving in church doesnt work that way. It works on the principle of the poor always giving to make the rich richer. The church keeps expanding, the General Overseer/the Head Pastor (essentially the head ni**a-in-charge) keeps getting richer & the poor masses in the church remain the same or are even getting poorer. Youre told that if you give to God, you will be richer (read you will prosper) but how many of those that drop money in church have become richer? Despite all the giving in church, the poverty level of church members hasnt improved. As youre seated in church this morning, look around you & see if anyones financial life has improved remarkably despite all their giving in church. Dont let anyone deceive you any longer! Giving in church is an act of worship to God? Let me concede that to you. I will indulge you by agreeing that you should worship God financially but I will show you a better worship. That money you plan to give in church? Package it & drop it in an orphanage. Im sure God wont be angry with you if you do that. Hypocrisy is what I call abandoning the needy people around you while dropping money in church. Wickedness is what I call dropping tithes of N15,000 every month while your parents wallow in abject poverty. Inhumanity is what I call dropping N10,000 building offering in church while closing your ears to a poor students cry for only N5,000 school fees. Animalistic tendency is what I call dropping a thanksgiving offering to thank God that youre alive when sick folks on the hospital beds cant pay their hospital bills. Social equity says if you have surplus money to spare, you should give to those that dont have as much as you do, not church. Dont let them help you give it to the needy (bcos they really wont): you too have the needy around you that you can bless for yourself. Calculate how much you gave in church (tithes, offerings & levies) throughout last year & imagine giving all of that to the needy around you. How awesome it wouldve been! Now imagine if everybody else did the same thing. What a society we wouldve had! If everybody followed my advice, there would be very few or no poor persons around. Night vigils & prayer points would reduce & the church would no longer be required to run welfare services. — Peter Adeosun Keyz January 2015
