THE Palau Humanities Project has named Bilung Gloria Gibbons Salii and Marilyn Rideb as two of the fascinating women of Palau/Micronesia for 2014. GLORIA SALII MARILYN RIDEB Palau Humanities project director Christy Sakaziro said in 1975, Salii became acting high chief of the Eoueldaob region of Koror after the death of her uncle, Ngoriakl, and also represented her grandmother who was then the bilung, the female equivalent of the high chief title. Salii has been a member of the national legislature and president of Palau women’s union. Sakaziro said Salii is respectfully known for her role in educating citizens and empowering women in Palau. She was the recipient of the Women’s International Rights Advocacy Award. Palau Community College has a scholarship sponsored by Salii and named after Prince Lee Boo. Among the many projects of Salii for the betterment of Palau and its people are those related to cultural preservation and the Ngarachamayong Center. She is also involved in preserving the environment and traditions of Palau. Under Salii’s leadership, Sakaziro said many meetings took place leading to a series of annual Mechesil Belau conferences, the results of which have influenced legislation and national policies that aim to preserve Palauan culture and traditions. Rideb, for her part, is one of the most beautiful and intelligent women of Palau, Sakaziro said. Through online and social media, Rideb has kept the world updated and well informed about what is happening in Palau.
