THE Prince of Wales has said he will join the police service in honouring all those killed in the line of duty since modern policing began at this year’s national memorial day. To be held at St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Sunday 29th September 2013, the National Police Memorial Day promises “to ensure that our fallen colleagues are never forgotten and that each year we join together to commemorate them and their proud legacy that we will forever treasure.” Founded by Sergeant Joe Holness QPM after his colleague was killed on duty, National Police Memorial Day is supported by the Police Federation of England and Wales and attended by hundreds of family, friends and colleagues from across the UK policing family and Home Offices. Steve Williams, Chair, Police Federation of England and Wales, says of the event: “This day is a way for us to recognise the best of all human qualities – selfless and devoted courage. The example and valour of those officers who died on duty acts as an inspiration to us all. "The tragic events of the past few days have once again brought home the importance of recognising the risks that police officers take every time they go to work.” Sergeant Joe Holness QPM, Founder, National Police Memorial Day, says: “Sadly, each year police officers continue to give their lives so that we can all live in peace. Yet police officers continue to run to danger for the sake of others and they continue to serve their country with pride and the utmost valour, knowing all too well the risks involved.” Home Secretary, Theresa May, said: “The tragic death of PC Andrew Duncan brings home the importance of National Police Memorial Day, when we come together to remember the debt of gratitude we owe to policemen and women across the country who put themselves in harm’s way to protect us. “PC Duncan gave more than 20 years’ service to the people of London and was described by colleagues in the Metropolitan Police as both courageous and hard working.”
