THE REAL THING BEATS A FAKE! Exodus 20:4-6 Idolatry is the attempt to worship a SPIRITUAL God in a NATURAL way. 1. Worshipping A Graven Image Makes A MOCKERY Of Real Worship. 4 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the water under the earth:" Verse 4 covers everything in the SKY, on the SURFACE, or under the SEA! 1. Idols DISTORT God! a. There is the "MAN UPSTAIRS" god. (He is just one floor above us) b. There is the "SANTA CLAUS" god. (Free stuff, just blab it and grab it !) c. There is the "DOCTOR" god. (Just command your healing!) d. There is the "LOVEY-DOVEY" god. (No hell, no judgment, just love!) 2. Idols DEGRADE God! a. An idol makes the INFINITE God FINITE. b. An idol makes the INVISABLE God VISIBLE. c. An idol makes the OMNIPOTENT God IMPOTENT. d. An idol makes the ETERNAL God TEMPORAL. e. An idol makes the SOVEREIGN God a STATUE! 2. Worshipping A Graven Image Makes A MYTHOLOGY Of Real Worship. 5 "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and forth generation of them that hate me." If a mom and dad worship a myth their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren etc. will probably worship a myth! Our God in heaven is not a myth, legend, folk tale, fiction, or a statue. He is the Almighty God Creator of the universe and all things seen and unseen! He has sent His dear Son Jesus Christ and wrote a Book to tell mankind about HIM! Jeremiah 14:22 "Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made these things." 3. Worshipping The Great Invisible God MOTIVATES Real Worship. 6 "And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." Think about your family tree. The curse lasts 3 or 4 generations but the blessing lasts for thousands! Did you know the Greek word for image is our English word for "icon?" Jesus is the exact "icon" or image of God! Jesus was not made AFTER the image of God, and He was not made IN the image of God, Jesus IS the image of God! The Catholics can have their statues, I will take the Savior!
