THE REED (For late Papa Okoro Susuluwa of Oguname-Olomu) Like a reed in the river Tossed everywhere by angry waves, I wave and wave With no hope when... when I may be free from weary of wait... Everything I want, I have to wait... From here to there, I had to wait... In huts and houses I had to wait... For replies to my requests I had to wait... Everything I do... I had to wait, wait, wait, Till wait entered my blood To drain my weight... Wearing me weightless as weed As I rove on this river... This roaring river that roves Me here and there as a rover... I never know when and where My weary waits will weir. Like a river reed We are still waiting and wading Till hens grow teeth So we have to wait, wail, wait... Wait, wait, wait... oh wait For crumbs from Pharaohs plates Till we lie and late... What could be weary than wait That has no endless date To know our fate In this big fool... full of hate?
