THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA AGAINST STRAY ANIMALS 11/07/2013 In Chisinau, the Capital of the Republic of Moldova, stray dogs and cats are maliciously and heartlessly poisoned and left to die for hours in agony on the streets, on the sight of passers-by, often witnesses of these terrifying scenes. A suspect is even worst: there is also a covert method to make homeless dogs disappear. It seems that vehicles of the local sanitation services, whose responsibility and duty is to maintain “clean” the capital, capture strays, perceiving them as any extra road rubbish. Most often, for capturing the poor animals are used inappropriate gears that frequently cause severe or even lethal injuries. Subsequently, the animals are conducted in very miserable conditions to the endpoint, named Uzinelor 207. This place belongs to the sanitation service and no one can enter into the territory without permission of the head. Well, there are no volunteers taking care of the dogs. Only owners could obtain a permission to enter, if the sanitation service accidentally caught an owned dog or if owners are looking for their dog. Despite the strict controls, animal activists entered and documented the shocking situation of dogs with photos and videos. Those videos show a high number of dogs in the same dirty cage. Overcrowded cages generate attacks and fights between dogs that could cause die or severe injuries. That is not all. It seems that animals are often without food and water and they being poisoned with Chlorine that destroys the animals’ skin and the organism. Volunteers reported us that when the dogs are dead or almost dead, their bodies are thrown into an acid bath. Recently, Republic of Moldova is officially involved with European Union for the review of its laws. Well, implementation of a national law for animal protection and welfare is in the interest of the country. The OIPA member league named “Alga”, non-governmental organization for protection of homeless animals, is active against mistreatment and harm of stray dogs. In the past, the president of the organization Valentina Dudnic proposed to the Municipality a neutering and medical assistance campaign for strays, with the help of foreign volunteering veterinaries. Alga just needed a confirmation from the Municipality Hall but they did not reply. In the last weeks, there have been various protest marches. One of the most important was on 1st June, about a hundred of animal activists held a march though the city streets, in the direction of the Municipality of Chisinau, showing images of poisoned stray dogs. Animal activists asked to the Mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca, to stop immediately the killings of strays and start a neutering campaign and to build a shelter. OIPA addressed a letter to the Moldovan Ambassador in Italy Aurel Băieşu, requesting the establishment of a cooperation for the management of the stray population, asking the help of the OIPA member league Alga. alga.md/
