THE ROAD TO SONORA I’ve travelled down this dusty turnpike - TopicsExpress

THE ROAD TO SONORA I’ve travelled down this dusty turnpike lane A thousand and one times Hearing your voice, crackling in the wind Like through some rusted chimes Before the dawn, I think of you When the black mist rises on the bay And the twinkling lights of ships in the distance Paint the morning grey Where do we go from here What pieces of the darkness do I collect To weave into the sparks of light That your lost dreams reflect Which way is home Which way do your stars point tonight Like arrows through the sacred sky To your flickering light I hear the rustling of the wind Listen to the leaves that fall All the dreams we can’t rescind All the ancient spirits that call It’s been a long road We’ve been through a lot tonight I see the blue in your eyes And there’s not enough light In this misty blue horizon, on this Arizona highway Seeing your face in the clouds that lead me home I never could find the right words to say To lead you back through the roads we used to roam I know I wasn’t always the person that you needed I know my words were not so easy for you to sing I guess I never stopped to hear the warnings never heeded Or consider what tomorrow might bring But I’ve got work to do now I’ve got things on my mind I’ve got fences to mend and places to go To seek what I can’t find Put your head on my shoulder Settle in for the long ride Every rock falls like a boulder Every sunrise shows the face that we can’t hide And love that endures, like the sea Seeps above the craggy rocks Washes up in tiny bubbles Analysed along the shore The water’s edge yields no refuge To the sad-eyed Children of the Night The sea at Peñasco is quiet now Its raging waves beyond my window Sunken into yesterday’s horizon (Lost worlds within lost worlds, Islands undiscovered) My heart follows you like the moon Across continents and seas Like a breeze through the sea-grapes On a desert night I walk along the beach and think of you Where have you been Where are you going Where do you disappear To hide the face you’re showing What are you reaching for What are you trying So hard to hide your heart away from In your dreams left dying I see your face I know the darkness in your eyes The midnight heart left beating In the sunrise I know what you’re doing now I see it on my calendar I am wounded by weakness Wounded by what we once were Was it my destiny that you go free To fly away like a wind on fire Did you count the cost of the spark lost On your ash-heap of greed and desire Your candles down to their wicks Lost in confusion Nothing quite as it seems You’ve reached too far into your bag of tricks And come up with illusions Masquerading as dreams What are you escaping to On this naked highway of frozen tears That settle on your cracked boots And are swept away It’s been a long road Too many lessons left to learn On this highway of lost dreams Not knowing which way to turn Another day, another sun beat down on my dusty shoes Another dream chased down this dusty storm-tossed road Since I lost you, I had nothing to lose But this sand in my shoes I couldn’t unload I know I wasn’t always the person that you needed I know my words were not so easy for you to sing I guess I never stopped to hear the warnings never heeded On your journey with a broken wing Did you see me in the darkness When all hope was lost I walked the dusty void, searching For your heart, tempest-tossed Did we find our light to lead us Did we make it to our promised land Did you till the field to feed us Did you take my outstretched hand You were born in the Summer of Love On the kind of day men remember When they push their noses against the glass On the first snow of December The American princess, the girl-next-door The high-school hussy, the Cambridge whore What page of history did you step out of To wind up at my door If the price of love is heartache Then you must be the prize For the miles walked in search of True love, wicked and wise I’ll think of you when I hear a symphony Or see a new ballet Your smile will be the homage That I cannot repay I was the peasant who eyed you When you rode by on the king’s carriage I risked life and limb To ask your hand in marriage From the forest I saw you standing At the gate of the castle Auburn hair flowing in the wind Like a tassel Now the centuries have passed like chimes We died and were reborn a thousand times Someday when the music is playing There’s wind in your hair and the palm tress are swaying With the sounds of the afternoon quietly calling And the clouds in the sky appear ever-falling When there’s war on TV and there’s stress in your head And you wonder if we’ll all end up dead ‘Cause it seems like there’s no way for man to survive Someday when you’ve read all their books Resigned yourself to the shysters and crooks When the breath of the sea washes up on your toes And you’re hiding your pain but you know that it shows And the yuppies are out at the end of the day And you can’t help yourself so you kneel down and pray For no reason but being alive Someday when you close the page You finally break out from your cage And stretch out to the changing season Hoping for some rhyme or reason When you’re weary from attack And you feel that you’ve lost track Of all the things for which we strive Someday when the songs of birds Seem to you the only words That mean anything at all You’ve risen from your fall When the waves that call your name Remind you that there is no shame That’s when I’ll arrive Night covers me like a blanket Time washes over me like a wave from the sea Yes, I once loved you Yes, you once loved me I remember the light-house at Rocky Point There where the sun played shadows on the wall And sleeping in the sand on the Sea of Cortez Watching the stars fall Where did I lose you Somewhere on this Mexican beach With the sky just out of reach My life is like a rose Each petal is a question Each drop of dew an ocean Of unrequited love But holding you Was like holding back the tears Of six-thousand years
