The Rubber Duck Project arrives in Pittsburgh on Friday, September 27. It will stay in the river and be visible for several weeks, through the Steelers v. Ravens game on Sunday, October 20. What is it? The Duck is an inflatable piece of art made of PVC, four stories tall and three-stories wide. Different versions of it have appeared since 2007 in Hong Kong, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Amsterdam and elsewhere. The Pittsburgh version will be made locally, under the direction of the artist, Florentijn Hofman of the Netherlands. What will it do? On Friday, September 27 it makes its first U.S. appearance by floating down the Ohio River from the West End. It will circle the Point and head to a mooring space outside PNC Park on the Allegheny River. That evening, to welcome the Duck and kickoff the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, there will be a and free bridge party on the Sixth Street (Clemente) Bridge and Cultural District Gallery Crawl from 5:30-10PM. Later the Duck will be moored at the north face,off the tip of Point State Park where it will stay through most of its time in Pittsburgh. It will remain on the river through October 20. Why does it matter? It is the first time it will appear in the U.S. and it has caused a sensation wherever it has been, particularly Hong Kong where it last appeared.
