THE RUSTING REMAINS OF A LOST DREAM The original attempt to cablecar the Aiguille du Midi 30-40 minutes walk from the mouth of the Mont Blanc tunnel, in the woods and invaded by vegetation, lie the rusting ruins of the first Aiguille du Midi cablecar, commenced in 1910 and interrupted by two world wars. The great prestige of Chamonix hosting the first Winter Olympics in 1924 boosted the project. It achieved a two-stage climb to the foot of the Aiguille at 2414m in 1927, with a third section planned to the Col du Midi (3600m). Ultimately, after overcoming financial failure, WW2 doomed the projects completion. The eventual engineering triumph over the Aiguille du Midi came in 1956, from a different (Chamonix town) base location and a line of ascent that has served the past 58 years.
