THE SAGE... Of Womanhood A MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN, who was materially successful, was being tormented by a certain worry. Eager to share her bother, she found her way to the abode of the Sage, and after a short time of waiting, a devotee who stood by the doorway ushered her in. The Sage gleamed as he beheld the elegant and decently dressed individual. Women who ennobled womanhood through their dignified ways of dressing always drew his admiration. “And what may I do for you, woman?” he pleasantly asked. The woman, who could read understanding and compassion in the eyes of the Sage, knelt down and started to sob. The words she blurted out were barely audible: “I’m approaching my mid-thirties and the Lord has been gracious enough to give me all the material comforts I need. Sadly, I’ve been unable to find a man who would like to marry me and with whom I could have children. It embarrasses me greatly. Especially when I’m in the company of my peers who have long been married.” The Sage kept mute for a while with his gaze fixed on the woman. His first words were most astonishing, especially, as he uttered them with a smile on his face: “To which order do you belong; The animal or the human?” The woman felt slighted by the question, but the penetrating stare in the eyes of the man seated before her spurred her on to answering: “Human. Surely human!” “You’re quite right,” affirmed the Sage. “And as a living being belonging to that order, your highest task on earth goes way beyond motherhood! Neither does motherhood and marriage necessarily lead you towards fulfillment!” At this point the woman confessed her feelings of confusion. “Surely every woman needed marry and bear children to find happiness! Wise One, I am lost to your path of reasoning.” The Sage stood up and led her to a courtyard where he called for two stools. He sat down on the higher and offered her a seat on the lower. Subtly, he spoke his truth: “In the animal kingdom, there are many creatures that die immediately after they deliver. Others are even consumed by their offspring when the latter hatch. Motherhood stands as the highest role of these creatures. And that is why many an animal, at the risk of their lives, fearlessly defend their offspring. The situation with the human being of the female gender is much more different. She stands much higher in Creation! Her noble task on earth goes way beyond motherhood! Neither can she instinctively ever attain to the sort of motherly care that is expressed by the animals! That is why it has also been rightfully observed that the maternal instinct is much stronger in the animal than in the human being! Motherhood should never be toyed or trifled with nonetheless, neither should a woman fail to take appropriate care of the guests that have been permitted to come through her! As a woman you stand under the highest of blessings. Your entire being was moulded with the utmost care to preserve your fine spirituality. That is why you are more delicate than the man. You receive more strongly from the power streams of Life and your words, thoughts and deeds permeate and influence everything more incisively in the world of matter. Sadly, woman uses this priceless power for evil rather than for good! Have you not observed how the mere presence of one dignified woman can bring an army of drunken soldiers to order?! Her person has been so created to mediate beautiful currents of light to those who surround her. Unconsciously, the man longs for, draws from, and swings in this lofty will. It even goes much further!” The Sage’s tone changed as he further admonished: “You have the power, woman, to turn this world into a paradise! You have the power, woman, to effectively eradicate all crime! You have the power, woman, to heal with your tender words! You have the power, woman, to attract that which is sublime!” The Sage paused briefly and commenced again in a compassionate tone: “I do not put all the blame on you. For the greater part of the women on earth have debased and buried these treasures preferring to embark on vain and selfish pursuits. They are no longer conscious of their roles, neither do they know where they stand! It is now even more unfortunate that the man, who by nature stands under her, and who is in great need of the currents she is meant to mediate, now has to strive to make her recognise her role! Through her great and tragic fall too, another type of man has fallen to a woeful level of utter baseness. Sadly, and just because of her ... the greater part of humanity is lost!” The words of the Sage had a profound effect on the woman, whose eyes widened. Goose flesh appeared on her skin and she seemed transfixed by the Wise One’s admonitions. The Sage beheld her countenance, got up, and exchanged stools with her. He sat down on the lower and looking up at her, gave his final words of wisdom: “Now you go out there, woman, and ennoble! Ennoble the entire world! Lead and the man will surely follow. For your wish is an unspoken command! Absorb also … that motherhood is distinct from womanhood!”
