THE SCIENCE OF SMOKING: WHY DO CIGARETTE SMOKERS COUGH MORE WHEN THEY FIRST QUIT SMOKING? Smoking cigarettes inhibits coughing as it numbs the lung’s cilia. Cilia are tiny hair-like organelles in our lungs that sweep debris such as dirt, environmental pollutants, and toxins out through coughing. After having not smoked for about 2 days, the cilia begin to regenerate their ability to cough & clean the lungs properly. This causes a quitting smoker to cough profusely for a week or two after they initially stop smoking. Miraculously the cilia heal themselves and regain full function again after ONLY a month.
