THE SEARCH (contd) SCENE 3- Evening (Ronke and Bimbos room. Bimbo comes in, holding her wig and gown and some books. She is followed by her friend Yetunde) YETUNDE Bimbo whats is the matter? Youve been acting really quiet for some time now. You were obviously distracted this morning when you were asked to make your appearance in court. (puts her hands on Bimbos shoulders as she stand before her) Whats bothering you? BIMBO (sighs) Youll hate me if I tell you. YETUNDE Try me BIMBO Its Ronke. (pause) Shes crazy about Shola. YETUNDE And... BIMBO Im in love with Shola. Four months ago, he proposed to me YETUNDE Oh no! (sits down) This is serious. Have you given him an answer yet? BIMBO No. I dont want to hurt Ronkes feelings. Every night she keeps talking about how privileged she is to have Shola in her life. I confided in the Pastor but he told me to tell her the position of things. But I cant. YETUNDE Give me the full gist. How did this love suddenly spring up Bimbo because Shola just joined our branch about six months ago? Did God lead you to him? Are you sure of your convictions? BIMBO (sits) Yetunde, you know me too well. Im an advocate of seeking Gods will on all issues.(pause) I have known Shola for about four years now. I met him in Port Harcourt during my chambers attachment. We were both in the Sunday school unit then and we were friends. I didnt see him in an intimate way until the day he came for my call to bar ceremony in Abuja. I was surprised and happy. Since then a kind of chemistry has arisen. After then I prayed severally but he was still in my heart. (Pause) After my youth service, we both lost contact, and I only got to see him the first Sunday he came to church. YETUNDE Hmmm BIMBO When Ronke got crazy about him, I was at first hurt but later I let it go. I was happy for her and began to pray for a blissful union only for the Pastor to called me after one sunday service and ask what i knew about Shola. Three days later, he proposed. I was shocked. YETUNDE Have you spoken to him since then? BIMBO Yes he calls sometimes.... just to say hi YETUNDE Bimbo you are not been fair to him. Four months... haba! when you already have your answer. God is not happy with you on this o. BIMBO What do I do Yetunde? YETUNDE (pause) You have to tell her today. BIMBO Oh my God! Im so scared YETUNDE Its not like you pushed yourself on him. Shola came looking for what he wanted. Deal with this matter fast and stop playing a game with Sholas heart. (pause) But I thought Michael was making some moves towards Ronke. What has he been doing by her side all these years? BIMBO She said they are just friends. (pause) Will you be there when I break the news to her? YETUNDE Of course not. I dont want- (Ronke comes in) RONKE Whats up Ladies YETUNDE Hey Ronke. How was work? RONKE Boring as usual. If not for the pay, I would have disappeared long ago YETUNDE I should be going. I have to prepare for a motion that I will move in court tomorrow. (Bimbo tries to pull her hand. Yetunde smiles and pulls away) See you tomorrow. (She leaves) RONKE Hey how did you do in court today? BIMBO (pause) Great RONKE Ive been trying to reach Shola since morning. His phones were switched off. I dont know why he is so slow in making a move. Can you imagine? Its been six months and he is not saying anything. Do you think he is shy? I saw a beautiful wedding dress in a boutique. Ill make sure I stop over tomorrow and try it on. You think I am anxious right?.(laughs) But theres nothing wrong in making such preparations for a glorious future. BIMBO Shola proposed to me. (silence) RONKE You said what? BIMBO He proposed to me RONKE (pause) Thats a lie. My Shola can never do that. BIMBO Yes he did. RONKE And.... What was your reply BIMBO I havent given him any yet. I wanted to talk to you first RONKE Ok. Let frame the question this way. What will your answer be? BIMBO See Ronke, Shola has been on my heart for years. Can you remember I told about a man I met in Port Harcourt? That I said I loved? RONKE I get it. So your answer is Yes. (pause) The man Ive been waiting for has been stolen by my best friend. How sweet. BIMBO I did not- RONKE (sharply)I dont want to hear anything you have to say. All these months you had your eyes fixed on him while you pretended to support me? No wonder youve been acting really strange.(tears) I regret the day I met you. You are worse than Judas. (Bimbo tries to hold her shoulders) Get your hands off me! Husband snatcher (walks out) BIMBO Oh God, why is this happening. I dont want to lose my friend. Lord please teach me how to handle this situation... please. CURTAIN FALLS
