THE SHAPE THAT LAUNCHED A THOUSAND CONCERTS Whats in a shape? When you stop to think about it; quite a lot. While you are thinking, picture in your mind the silhouettes of the following: an i-phone, the Taj Mahal, a palm tree, the balalaika... The balalaika. Triangular, three-stringed, tremulous, old-and-forever new, chattering, singing and sighing, the balalaika is this and more. An iconic instrument whose outline evokes interweaving images of Russia past and present, the peasant and the prince, the village, golden domed cities, romantic love and the ever abiding love of the land. This marvel of simplicity and eloquence also happens to be part of the core of our orchestra. We think its time for some special recognition of one of our own, of the balalaikas 126 years on the concert stage, of that lively bell-toned voice, of that shape.
