THE SILVER BRIGADES FIGHT FOR FENTON Fentons Silver Brigade - TopicsExpress

THE SILVER BRIGADES FIGHT FOR FENTON Fentons Silver Brigade have been busying themselves getting ready for Saturdays Landowners Day, when people from across the city will come together to lay tributes at the foot of Fentons Town Hall and receive poppies in commemoration of the men remembered on the war memorials hung up on the walls inside. Pensioners have been spending the last few days dividing 1 kilo bags of Flanders Poppies into 10mg packets and it is hoped that households and businesses across Fenton will take the opportunity to sow the seeds in their gardens, window boxes and on their land to create a real splash of colour this August time, in readiness for the 100th anniverary of the Great War. The campaign group Fenton498, set up to transform the town hall back into a venue for the benefit for the immediate and wider economy, will be asking for a minimum donation of £1 per packet. Landowners Day takes its name from the fallen soldiers of the First World War; for many it was the only piece of land they were to own. The gathering to lay tributes begins at 12.30 in Albert Square. In addition to the offering of poppies there will be a march past, speeches, music, WW1 poetry and a roll call of the 498 names on the memorial to the Great War, which cannot be removed from the building. photo - Cheryl Gerrard with Sheila Poultney
