THE SOUL: Among the well renowned Muslim scholars who wrote about the nature of the human soul is Imam Ibn Al Qayyim Al Jawziyyah. The Imam, in his Book, Leading the Soul to the Home of Happiness حادي الارواح الي بلاد الافراح as well as Key to the Abode of Happiness مفاتاح دار السعادة The Soul الروح, articulately handles the relation between the Soul and the Body in full detail. I derive great privilege and pleasure in paying tribute to one of my favorite Scholars, Ibn Al Qayyim and his Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyah to illuminate and highlight the subject of the Soul in the following lines. When the Jews of Madina instructed idolators of Makka to ask Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, three questions, 1-People of the Cave, 2-Yajuj Wa Majuj (Gog and Magog), and the matters related to the 3-Essence of the Soul. The Jews were so cunning that they included the question on the Soul deliberately knowing well that fact that it was in neither Muhammads nor any other creations knowledge. Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him answered the first two and remained silent on the third. Allah revealed a verse which affirms that the knowledge of the Essence of the Soul was not meant to be within the capacity of any of the creation. The Soul, is obviously not physical. It remains pristine and pure when safeguarded from greediness and evil matters. It also gets corrupt and spoilt when indulged in corruption.Purification of the Soul is different to that of the body, being spirit, the Soul cant be purified by any physical products, its purification is through ascension and transcendence to the elevated levels of the spiritual nature.The Soul is heavenly as the Body is earthly, thus each craves for its origin. The Soul desires for an uplift and ascension to Paradise, however when overcome and subdued by the gravity of the earthly Body, it surrenders to the carnal passion and earthly lusts. Its Egoism and selfishness as I only I am, becomes too much evident. The Soul, like the body, exhibits a desire for both good and evil, and acts as a dominion over the Body. If fortunate enough, its desire shall be converged on the good, nevertheless, if wretched and conquered by the Body, it shall dote over the evil matters. Because the Soul is a spirit, its complex to understand its function in detail. The physical nature of the Body is much easier and more familiar to us. Hence all our supplications are related to the well being of the hearts. I like to focus on the Soul and watch its variety, as I consider the body just a casing for it. The packaging does not matter to me as long the core essence inside is precious. I therefore scrutinize the good Soul, generous, trustworthy, honest, truthful, innocent, satisfied, content, well mannered, calm, quiet, confident, and beautiful. I never care about the outer cover, the Body. اللهم اجعل سريرتي حيرا من علانيتي O Allah make the inner secrets of my Soul better than my outer appearance and Body.
